I recently was give a cheap android tablet and I have no use for it currently. I got an idea to strip it and use it as a headunit. I remember seeing a couple of people doing it online and after a little bit of research it seems pretty simple.
Strip down the rather bulky tablet and create a screen flip up out of the map pocket.
Simply connect the headphone out to an external channel processor mounted in our lower din for dedicated volume control.
Hifonics HFEQ 4-Band Equalizer with 9-Volt Line-Driver and
Then simply drive the speakers with dedicated amps.
Only downside is powering the device on and waiting for boot unless standby mode will last awhile. And I can charge it by hooking it up to the acc on.

One I got is 7"
I've seen someone put a 7" lcd in the map pocket before. But unfortunately no write up. Probably could rig something up with a dvd track and a pivot point.
If I do decide to do this I'll have to wait till I amplify my whole system. Or I could do it now and test how I like it just using my stereos aux in. Still need to figure out the top bin.
