i was brought a 400W punch amp.. im just wondering if the stock alternator is enough to power this amp on top of the HID's and stuff.
will i have trouble with the stock alternator? i think the stock alternator has a 80 amp output..
if you guys have links for alternator rated more than 80 Amps, would very appreciate that and your comments on amp ratings..

I think that your alternator should be enough with a properly wired and designed system.
Some people use capacitors to minimize the ' light dimming effect ' of a powerful system.

Im pretty sure our alts or 100-110 amp. is the Amp a class a/b or class d it can make a difference in the current it draws. But I would think you will be ok with only 400 watt
SE-R or no? The 2.5's alty will output a few more amps than the 1.8. That being said I have no issues running 1200w worth of amps (1.5 farad cap inline though) and my hids, etc.
A upgraded alternator isn't necessary unless you are running some serious electrical stuff like 1500+ RMS amplifiers.
A capacitor is just a band-aid to a much bigger problem, the proper way to fix any dimming of the lights is to upgrade the big 3 in your car's charging system and the next step is to either upgrade the battery up front or add a decent cell in the trunk or something.
And if all of that doesn't work upgrade your alternator to one that puts out about 150 amps or so and make sure the battery can keep up with the alternator's charging abilities.
im with shane. im running a 1000rms kenwood and a 2 farad cap, lights dim, but thats what you have a battery for, your not going to pound it all the way home and not have your car start the next day. end of story.

For what it's worth, I went through two alternators in 2 years only running a single 400w amp. I was running only 8ga wiring to it, and had the stock battery. After switching to 4ga wiring, adding another 800w amp, the cap, and an Optima Redtop, I haven't had any issues since.
You should be fine with a 400watt amp. But it's always good to compensate for extra load on your alternator with an extra dry cell battery or capacitor

ok cool. ill find a cap. and at some point ill get a redtop battery like misternuts.. lol

you should upgrade your electrical if your running 1000 rms on a 110 amp alt. Thats only good for around 1100 watts before u add in all your other electrical components
This is when you upgrade the size of the wiring on the charging system, the alternator to battery wire and the alternator to frame wire are 4 gauge stock and you upgrade these wires to 0 gauge to help out the electrical system.
Also a better battery is a much better solution to lights dimming than a capacitor is, do some research and you will find out that capacitors just put more load on your alternator.
