    Default new B15... few questions

Okay, so I just picked up an 02 SE-R Spec V (as per http://www.nycsentras.com/showthread.php?t=6925)... and I've been DD'ing it for the last couple weeks and I have a few questions about some issues it has -

    1) Temp Gauge is dead. I will try to diagnose this week... but where exactly is the sensor located? according to the FSM there are two sensors where the upper radiator hose meets the block, but I can only see one? If anyone can post a pic to show me where it is that would be great...

    2) Car has 50k miles w/ original nissan battery. Sometimes it takes a long time to crank and makes a slight rattling sound when it does so. Once the motor is running its smooth with nice, comfortable, quiet power delivery. I'm assuming it needs a tune up & new battery... but any other suggestions?

    3) Someone broke into the trunk of the car when the previous owner owned it, and damaged the lock / metal around the lock in order to gain access to the trunk. I plan to repair this soon - but it would be very helpful if someone could post a picture of a B15 trunk lid w/o the lock in there. Also if anyone has a Silver trunk lid for sale w/ spoiler holes for cheap I'd consider buying it!

    4) I plan to take off the top of the intake manifold soon so I can loctite the screws on the butterfly valves (keeping the car under 5k rpms till then...) Does anyone have a time estimate on how long this takes? I'm fairly competent with this stuff... but avg time needed would be nice to know before I tackle the job.

Other than that the car is great... torque is really smooth and noticeable, and its very fun and comfortable to daily drive.

    Thanks in advance!

#2 Might be your fuel pump.
#4 Shouldn't take more than an hour if that.

I usually just turn it right away... sometimes it starts up instantly sometimes you hear it try to crank a few times before it gets going...

yea next time, when youre getting ready to make a move, just turn on the ignition for a few seconds let the pump build up pressure then turn it over. but i wouldnt spend 250 for a fuel pump when u can get a walboro for 95 bucks

$95 sounds more like it... I got a walboro sitting in my room actually... ready to go into the S14 soon (ka-t setup needs it).

Is there a specific part number / model number walboro I need? I can't seem to find a listing for a 02 Sentra...

it's a GSS-342 it cost $88 shipped from our vendor importcarpartsplus. Check the vendor section for his contact info. I doubt you need a new pump though, just do as TB stated above.

If you do intend on changing it to the aftermarket pump I would be more than willing to do the install for you, I've done 4 of those already.

okay update on the temp gauge:

read up the FSM, and as per page DI-14 of the FSM (for those of you that have it) I put the cluster into diagnostics mode. The cluster passed self diagnostics and additionally the temp gauge passed as well.

FSM now has a full diagnostics procedure on page DI-22. So I either need to pull the cluster and do the diagnostics there with my trusty multimeter, OR try and replace the sensor... I'll look at it more on thursday... that's when I'll have time.

also, after re-reading the fsm... apparently I misread before. QR25 has only one temp sensor, so that would be the one I will have to replace if need be.

    more updates:

as for starting the car, I did what TB said. works every time.:congrats:
buuut the car still makes a rattling noise from the front sometimes on startup - usually only on cold starts. I'm gonna have to have someone else start the car so I can listen for this rattle, can't replicate it any other time except startup.

Also, I changed the temperature sensor. Fail. Gauge still doesn't work. Gonna try the diagnostics procedure in the FSM soon.

Peep this thread for info about your rattle. Maybe it's the same thing?

As for the temp gauge, do you know if you can just replace the gauge in the cluster or must the whole cluster be replaced...what does the FSM say?

as far as the rattle... nah don't think that's it. I know what timing chain noise sounds like from my 240... KA24DE's are infamous for it, lol. It also goes away as soon as the car starts, and its impossible to replicate it while driving. Also, the car doesn't lose any oil between oil changes. Probably a loose heatshield or something? I'll figure it out soon I hope.

as far as the temp gauge, there are a bunch of spots the FSM says to probe on wiring harnesses to determine the problem. I'm gonna follow that and see what the diagnosis is. Worst case I think I'll have to buy a used cluster from ebay and swap the gauge.
