Feeling kinda lazy so I made an excel spreadsheet ECU ECM Computer PINOUT to compare 2003 maxima and 2002 sentra ECMs... might be some errors... it's kinda a mess with some filters applied and notes, but its useful.at least 4 me.
Got the intake manifold, crank pulley, accessories, lower oil pan, and front timing cover off. Noticed a small hole (damage) to the rear half of my timing cover while disassembling last night.. gonna get that welded up I think, as well its got a cracked coolant hose mount and yes my alternator too... oh well. Gave-up for the night after getting three of the cam gears loose, couldn't budge the fourth.... yet... seems tighter than the rest. Can't find camera right now... pics later.
This is getting fun! No I've never taken apart or rebuilt an engine before... did a head gasket on my old 999cc Chevy Turbo Sprint once LOL
are you done yet?? lol... hope you make it man!
Jones & Wuk-Up
Ohhh I'll make something alright lOL right now it's a mess, but hey... whatever. Took a little bit of time to try getting the fourth cam off and it didn't budge. The whole using a spanner wrench idea doesn't really make too much sense to me... slips out too easy... handle too short.... any way gonna see about buying a nice 3 or 4 foot pipe to add some leverage today/tomorrow.![]()
Sucks not having any air tools when doing an engine swap. It's a big enough pain doing it with them. Good luck though.

Ha... got that last cam bitch of a bolt off... got that pipe and ended up with a broken spanner wrench and so I improvised with some channel lock pliers to hold the cam... If I kept trying the other day I'm sure I woulda busted that cam right in half. Well thats it for today I think LOL...![]()
Got the cams out... rear timing cover off... upper oil pan, and heads off today... The cylinder walls need a hone... some moisture damage. Gonna take out the pistons when I get some external torx sockets to unbolt the crank and rods. Those e torx are hard to find after 5pm on a Saturday night LOL. The heads look good wear wise, but they need to be cleaned up a bunch... I'm gonna take em apart, it's gonna be fun.
So yeah... looks like quite a lot of work waiting to be done on this engine.
I might have a buyer for the auto tranny now... I'll see... but it should cover my original engine expense FTW!
So I JUST LOVE JUNK YARDS.... Got a new matching red/black back seat bottom in good condition (mine has a sewn repair after a mouse ate his way in my car through the trunk side vent...) , all 2005 sentra rubber door and trunk seals(mine are torn in few places and a bit brittle), a spare sentra crossmember ( for when I mock-up modify and make my VQ engine mounts), Sentra pop-up upper center dash storage bin (for future gauges project ), Black Altima 3.5 engine cover in ok condition (chrome rippling slightly), and passenger side 3.5 altima engine mount (looks like the requred maxima one).for $160 total.... not a bad haul I think.
I asked about buying just a maxima belhousing, no they don't just sell the bell housing... they only sell the whole unit... do you have crapppy ones? no just good ones but the guy offered me a 5 speed from an 05 Altima SER for $350... I'm like a 5 speed?? he double checked... and oh it's a six speed, so he like thats a good deal for a six speed, I'm like yah $250 is pretty good... He knew what was up LOL and said $300... but I had none of that. You know my wife is already to kill me already.... I can't do that right now.
Well I walked away, man I'm crazy sometimes... I'm not 100% sure the alty tranny fits?? Anyone know??
Finally got my E Torx set today... got to get back to it!
My budget is on a short chain... while I was on my long drive today I got to thinkin... I have a matching ecu and key from an AUTO o3 Max right... so I can just use them and have codes right! I mean why not... I have to get my vehicle tested once every two years here. And it will be coming up by winter. I can just mock everything up and have everything ready once my testing is done, pop it all in... codes and all.... then I'll have two years to decide on my next step.
No idea about the alty tranny...where are the VQ swappers...this guy has questions!
So far I know
05 Altima SER 6 Speed Tranny is Model RS6F51A
03 Maxima 6 Speed Tranny is Model RS6F51H
02 Sentra Spec-V M/T is Model RS6F51H
05 Sentra Spec-V M/T is Model RS6F51H
If you have a 6 speed with an open diff the code will be: RS6F51A - A as in open diff
If you have a 6 speed with a Helical Limitd slip Differential the code will read RS6F51H - H as in Helical.
The Model does not tell me about the bell housing, which is of course what I'm after (sort of).
304008H810 is the LSD bellhousing to use. There is a different bellhousing on Non-LSD trannys.
Maxima housing clutch 304008H810 was used from 01 - 06 on 6 speed MT "SE" Maximas and weight is 7.56 kg / 16.689 lb

The other day I was offered a nice deal on an Altima SER Tranny..
Altima housing clutch 304008H812 was used from 04-05 on 6 speed MT Altimas and on 03-06 MT Maximas and weight is 9.1 kg / 20.088 lb
http://nissan4u.com/parts/altima/us_...llustration_1/
Good thing I didn't get it.
The Altima SER has a Non-LSD Diff, but for the right price I was tempted to buy it for just the belhousing.... the bellhousings are different... not sure why but probablly something internal to do with LSd. So.. say you wanted a non-lsd swap this tranny should work (it was fitted in altimas and maximas...) but who-why-would you want to. LOL
Ok... So here it is...
http://nissan4u.com/parts/maxima/us_...e_and_fitting/
03 Maxima came with Manual Tranny 320107Y066 Non-LSD or with Manual Tranny 320107Y076 LSD (FTW!)
Got some replacement parts today at the junkyard... dissected a 97 Maxima with the VQ30. Got an upper and lower oil pan, the same as vq35 except for one accessory mount bolt that I noticed anyway... close enough. Got an alternator (same), idler pulley (same), and a thermostat coolant housing w/thermostat (missing one extra tube port out in my VQ35 broken piece (I'll try to make it work))... Tried for the crank pulley but I busted my fricken socket adapter... oh well... try another day.... 5 hours work and a nice sunburn... got to enjoy the fresh(ish) air and saw 3 or 4 trains go by.. Oh and of course the bill... $54 LOL... Did I ever mention I am cheap! Sometimes being cheap isn't good, but it can make for lots of fun![]()
good stuff lol...cheap ftw.
Man I'm diggin the progress of this thread. Keep it up man!
nice gona subscribe, these vq swaps are cool
haven't been on ina while good to see someone else goin at it.
Thanks for the positive support, I'm updating older posts I've made here as I learn and if it seems relevant so check old posts, not just new
____________
The Oil Cooler
The VQ35 oiler cooler semi-attached to my broken VQ35 upper oil pan is broken. The VQ30 doesn't use an oil cooler. I'm not going to use one... looks like a waste of time to me... The way it's set-up it uses your engine coolant to cool your oil... or warm it... or your engine oil to heat your coolant... idk but more or less its a heat exchanger... If I spend money I'll go with an after market oil cooler, and / or fans / rad depending on my temperatures.
i think the altima tranny would fit
Yeah, the Altima tranny should fit as a whole. The only thing is the Altima tranny does not have the limited slip differential, which ya probably want. If you wanted you could probably convert the Altima box to LSD... but then you need the Maxima bellhousing and a LSD to put in it. So it isn't worth it to me.
How's it going so far?
