So me and a buddy are having an argument. After doing my balance shaft chain cut and doing my crank pulley after driving aggressive for a good bit of time (20-30 minutes of on off spirited pulls) i seem to get a bit of a weird clunking noise coming from my motor. My friend is convinced its rod knock.
For one, my motor has 12k on it so i HIGHLY doubt its rod knock. Second, it goes away after about 2-3 minutes of the car being off. It also doesnt do it unless i drive a bit aggresively or if the idles sitting a bit low (when the vibrations are the worst)
I have ALOT more vibrations from my MMI's, wheel hop aid, and the balance shaft chain being cut, and my exhaust makes a thudding noise at idle, and my radiator rattles in its brackets, so im thinking its just something like my cross-member rattling (it has since i did my wheel hop aid) or my exhaust (no flex pipe).
So i just have 2 questions, can rod knock appear and disappear? And did anyone acquire any new noises after doing the balance chain cut?

Oil level low?
nvm...

motor mount?
Could just be some new vibration/rattle you are experiencing.
wow u fucked up ur engine............
kidding. first of all to answer ur question rod knock does not go away even if you put a thicker weight oil say 20w-50. Second of all if u said u just did ur crank pulley do u mean switched to lightened? if u did some lightweight pulleys could cause some noise because its not dampening the torsional vibration that the engine makes during combustion. Idk exactly how loud the knocking is if its a dull or sharp knock. But try draining a quart of oil and put a lucas oil additive to see if the pitch of the knock noise changes. If it does then you know its engine related.
Im fairly positive its just something rattling and knocking around. Ive got a whole lot of lately![]()

Did you make sure the pulley is not loose? You probably are feeling a knocking noise since the motor now is not balanced during its rotations..you should worry when you constantly hear the noise ...much worse at startup. And how do u have 12k miles?! Lol
mot is it still doing it?
Hasnt done it since it the night it first happened. And ive been driving plenty hard attempting to make a problem surface if there is one.
Im thinking its what evers clunking in my front end thats making the noise due to the vibrations. I need to find out what the noise is when i turn, brake, go over bumps, or let out the clutch too fast when starting out....because whatever it is, im almost possitive is vibrating and rattling at idle....

i Know this is an old ass thread and i just rebuilt my motor for boost, my crower rod bolts were touching the baffles on the BSR plate, i noticed this ever time i turned the crank. its an easy ass fix. Youll have to pull the plates out again and grab the plate with grooves, and with a hammer, tap the edges of the plate. your noise probably stopped cause of continuous grinding of that spot, that it just wore it out for clearance. hope everything was ok after an oil change. i just posted this for future help.
Wow, very interesting. A first for the BSR kit. Never heard of this until now, and would be good to know for anyone going to do it.

oh absolutley, good thing i was tightening the crank and noticed the noise then and not later, plus the oil pan was still off as well. i know this would help someone, so i posted it.
well it wouldnt sit right if it were upside down, it can only be inserted one way only. my guess is that the bolt head is a bit longer than oem yea. it was a light grinding sound, but its fixed, and easy to fix as well.
highly doubtful it's rod knock. sometimes you can and can't hear rod knock at idle, and you will most always hear it as soon as any load is applied to the engine, so if it isn't basically doing it as soon as the car is moving, and never stops, then i'd doubt it's rod knock. you will notice much more vibes after the balance chain cut, and with solids or mmi's, that vibration will increase further. you may need to loosen your crossmember bolts, make sure they are seated correctly, and retorque them to spec, along with the front and rear motor mounts, all torqued to spec. then check the trans mount and timing cover mount, and make sure nothing is loose. chances are something may have vibed loose, so a retorque on all of those bolts may solve your problem without much hassle. aside from that, it never hurts to make sure those bolts stay torqued to spec, they're all important.
