    Default Negotiating compensation for promotion?

So I'm in the process of getting a promotion at my job but Im really hating this drawn out process with Human Resources. They are selling the compensation for the new position to be so great but I have yet to hear the actual numbers. They sent me an email that they want me to start Monday but I still don't know EXACTLY HOW MUCH the pay is HAHA. I know it's more than what I make now but that's not good enough. I want to know the exact details before I leave my current position.

I feel like Human Resources is going to low ball the shit out of me and I am at the point where if they come at me with some bullshit numbers I'm gonna tell them "no thanks" and stay at my current position. The kicker is that I was recruited to be interviewed for the position by a regional manager. I didn't even know they had an opening and from day one he's been saying "I'm the right man for the job".

The question now though is how exactly do I play ball without killing any future chances of moving up?? ARGGGHH I hate this shit LOL.
I obviously want to get fair compensation for my skills but I'm in a position where they seemed to have already made up their mind that the job is mine even before I made up my mind.

Tight spot, passing up a promotion, even for a good reason to you could make them less likely to think of you when another position opens up.

I know man it's a tough spot to be in lol that's why I'm asking you guys.

Here's an example of the problem:

There are Assistant Managers making $50k a year plus 4.5% bonus on profits

The position they're offering me is a Manager position and they want to pay me $30k a year but with a higher bonus.

They're trying to sell me on the higher bonus part but the problem is when you do the math both the assistant and the manager position work out to be the same. Matter of fact the assistant position makes a bit more. However, I would have more responsibility, directly responsible for profit margins and I would also be higher on the ladder than the assistant.

Why would I accept less money for more responsibility and be making less than the person below me? I don't want to come off as a douche bag and decline the position because in the future the RM will think twice about considering me but at the same time I want fair compensation. Double edged sword?

Try to negiotiate a higher salery over a few years. Say you want to increase to 50 with the same higher bonus after 3 years with an increase every year. Just get it in writing if they agree.

At any rate, even if you make less than the AMs, taking the position could lead to other promotions. As long as it gives you more money than it does now, use it to build your resume for outside promotions.

The problem is that even making less than the AM is a huge problem. People who work under you don't respect your authority if they know you make less than them! Salary somehow leaks pretty easily at this company too so that makes it worse lmaoo. Man I'm confused!

More responsiblity and less pay, I know that song...

Do you know if the situation that your facing(not paid enough) has happened before in the company since you say that info leaks, you should get an idea from that. Have you expressed this to your RM as they might need to know this now before you see what figures you are expecting to get causes the change in your mind. Sometime the experince for a resume builder is better in the long run, not saying you don't deserve the x figure but look at the big picture and besides you have a job that you are getting a promotion in and look whats going on in the job market.

It looks like I'm preaching when I look at it unfortunatly but your making seem to trivial right now from what I'm gathering.

Agreed.......passing over a promotion can be detrimental if you plan on staying with the company. It seems as though you are looking at the small picture (base pay) and not at what YOU can control. If you get a bonus based on sales then YOU control your higher percentage bonus. Also, after manager comes corporate positions......hell, even corporate people for McDonalds make 60k a year with pretty good benefits from what I hear. Put in the work and you will earn the respect of your subordinates......if they don't, cut the shit out of their hours and give them back when they change their attitudes. Just my .02.

Tell them what YOU want. This is often easiest to do with a results-based compensation plan like JVspecV stated. But lean the request more in your own favor. IDK what exactly the position entails but be creative. There's ways to negotiate so that you'll actually be the one coming out on top but the key is BOTH PARTIES HAVE TO WIN... You're just gonna win bigger

It's just like the, uh, '100mph courtesy'... You start at 60, you don't let off 'til 160. You start at 30, you AT LEAST go to 130. And attempting to, uh, run like Houston interstates with traffic directly in front of you... These 60 to 80 pulls; these 60 to 95mph pulls... What the fuck is that shit about?" -IMV Films
