    Default N/A Conservative Build

Okay, I have been reading through pages and pages off of the search and found decent info but I would still like to hear input from others.

Looking at rebuilding my spare bottom end that needs to go in A.S.A.P. cause I have a rod knocking badly.

I would like to pep up the motor a bit by upping the CR some BUT I would like to stay on pump gas cause this is my daily/baby hauler. Everyone should know the options that are out there so with that said...

what is the most user friendly on pump gas for high(er) compression?

If this falls through I'll just use all the OE stuff with Total Seal rings and call it done.

Why not pick up a VQ block instead? More bang for your buck in the long run.

There's more to compression ratio limits than just numbers. It depends largely on the tune, and design of the piston.

12:1 would be a decent. You would be stepping into an area where 99% of people on this forum have no experience with (including myself).

07+ pistons or forged 11:1's would be doable with a decent tune and bigger cams.

i would love to do the vq, just too involved for right now and i dont have the funds for all of it. eventually though.

i should probably add that i was really not planning on doing much else with the motor. no cams or anything right now just header and exaust. i have a spare intake that i was going to port at work with free time eventually but thats about it for right now.

A stock VQ swap pieced together over time would be less money and hassle than a built N/A QR.

    I think?

The cost of the engine harness alone needed for the VQ could buy a running QR.

    Less hassle for sure though.

no. i just wanted to know if i could like swap in the 07 pistons and still run on pump gas or something like that. just bump up the compression. i dont want to just mill the head down and have valves smackin all over the pistons lol.

What I understand is that you need to replace your rods and want to know what else you can do while you're in this process. I'm also assuming that you will not be pulling your engine but will be doing the work with the large oil pan and head removed. This is what I would suggest:
    • Replace the rods with the 07+ rods for added strength. You'll also need new rod bearings.
    • Replace the pistons with the 10.5:1 07+ pistons. This will give you higher compression and you will have no problems running with pump gas. I believe they come in several grade sizes. If your cylinders are worn too much then you'll have to make a decision whether to pull the engine and bore the cylinders to the next 0.020" size.
    • Total Seal rings are a great idea. Consider using the gapless rings on top only, or get the whole set.

You can run 07 pistons no problem. Plenty of people do.

from the looking around i did last night thats what it looks like sebastian. thats cool. im trying to get ahold of total seal to get prices for a gapless top ring ringset. roughly $217. and i already found the pistons online. ill call local dealer tomorrow and see what kind of price they will give me.

    here is the online site

These are Grade 3 pistons. Don't buy them unless you're sure they'll fit. This is the largest size before the 0.5mm overbore.

    Total Seal Home
$24 per gapless top ring. $196/complete set.

they should cause im unsure of mileage on the motor but i cant really feel any major lip on the cylinder walls. i was just going to ball hone it myself.

are you sure that that set will work on the 07+ pistons? is the ring groove depth the same ect?

oh yeah, deffinately. i love assembling motors. i like how you have to be super careful and measure all the stuff up and double check clearances and tolerances.

this will actually be the first motor i have personally built than i will be running myself. i built my buddies qrT bottom end, a 4age for an AE86 and two V8's

Well if you have a little experience, the right tools, and patience, you should be able to accomplish that no problem.

They have a complete catalog in PDF format on their site with ring diameters, heights and depths. Better yet, give them a call and tell them what you need.
