as the title states. Both cars running stock internals. Who do you think would win it?
My thoughts:
the roller rocker b15 sr20 motor isnt as strong as the previous sr20's. The pistons dont hold as much power compared to previous years. I think the spec v turbonetics kit is rated for 300HP crank? I figure 20% power train loss, that would be about 240 WHP. If both cars were running around 240WHP I think the qr would take the sr any day. The fact remains, the qr is a torque monster, with a good launch it should be able to put a red bow on the sr and send it to the north pole.
Even though the qr has more torque, i personally would still want the sr20. Its a far more reliable engine, the aftermarket is bigger.
When the qr hits 80k miles its a big thing for the b15 community lol, but when a sr20 hits 80k, its nothing. Prolly just getting broken in.
Atleast with the sr20 you dont have to worry about butteryfly screws or the cat.
SE-R = Shift_Broken [sold 4/2008]
08 Mazda3 = Traded [sold 8/2009]
09 Mazdaspeed3 = Current
im not really asking about long term reliability more like who do you think would win a race.
i'd say qr...only cuz i have one lol
i'm thinking the qr
You cant really compare reliability...people overlook the fact that the SR is probably about 20 years old, which is MORE than enough time to work out the kinks. If you owned one the first few years when it came out, I wouldn't doubt that it had it's share of problems. Any new model motors from any company has its issues...you just dont realize because you dont frequent other forums no where as much as you do b15s.
I would go w/ the QR as well as far as the race...the QR motors are plenty more efficient and are "torque monsters"....but then again w/ all that toruqe, you'll just sit there and spin tires anyway...lol. I'm up to find out the answer to this question :-D
dont get me wrong, I would love to boost the shit out of an SR...but I'm working w/ what I have...plus boosted SR's are a dime a dozen.
btw...the turbonetics kit is rated at 240 WHP 236 ft/lb Tq (stock exhaust) and 275 WHP 262 ft/lb Tq w/ 3" exhaust.

im talking generalized here, not specific people's cars.
ok ash well if the kit is 240WHP on stock exhaust and 275 on 3" I think its fair to say on a 2.5" the kit should pump out about 255WHP?
if you look at the torque figures for a 255 WHP sr, its still going to be LOW compared to the spec v. I think the fact that the spec has so much torque, thats what will cause it to leave the SR from the line.
oh and the spec v kit, the stock clutch can handle that power? or do you need to upgrade the clutch?
everyone's agreements sound good but when it comes down to it, it's all on the driver.
but say both drivers were equal (kinda hard to believe i say) i'd say it'd be a close one.if it's jus stock for stock + turbo then it'd be close imho
I believe the kit can be handled with the stock clutch...until you start building for bigger PSI then you need a better clutch to handle it

i dunno much about Qr's but from wat i seen i wouldnt put my money against an SR.. i mean... yeah yeah 2.5 blahh blahh and that stupid kit thats gives the qr 275hp and 262tq i mean... i agree with ash on the sr being out longer and the have been kinks worked out.. but then again 4dr vs 4dr.... and with rocker arm stoppers the sr will rev higher with stock rockers soo i say SR down the line
Eventhough i had a QR i would say tha SR...there we're 3432047230 times where i pressed my car next to Ottleyz in 3rd and his kept it movin...we had tha same set up and his car definitely had a longer rev.he's in 3rd i'm already in 4th.I've also seen his car put a horrible spankin on 3 Evos so...
depends what kinda racing you're doing...1/4 mile or street. then again every car's different as well as tha driver.
I'M GERMAN NOW.
STPNYC.ORG - stay tuned performance
yes it has a lot to do with driver skill
i like this topic... im bumping this.. sorry everyone! ahah
i put my money on the QR... only because of the torque
damn someone called my name hahaha. and mr b15nyc, all that talk bout the roller rocker not being strong is all what it is just talk, do you have proven facts?? does anyone have proven facts?? people were saying the same shit bout the qr when it first dropped and look at it now. and yes with some rocker arm stoppers you can go a long way lol
Jones & Wuk-Up
torque is nice but its not everything...
if the cars are running street tires, the qr might be finished off the line, but if were talking slicks or drags - its a drivers race
and then take it to the fact of gearing and where in the rpm band either car is making peak power....
Jones & Wuk-Up
well yea i no more plays into affect... but a good launch is always helpfull... not saying it will win just on torque lol
there will never be an answer to this question, and i dunno where the 20% power loss comes from either, but im pretty much done with this thread before i get out of control lol.
and torque is fun, but hondas still bust our ass and thats something they dont have
Jones & Wuk-Up
hondas bust our ass cuz of hgh HP...and light cars...plus their engines are a bit better quality lol they can handle more power... i shitt on a civic si with intake and exhaust...07 i believe...
OMG can you refrain from bumpimg one year old threads....
