get the bypass, Ash has had his on for the longest, it never broke.
fuck the bypass.
Ive had a cai for almost 3 years now and have never needed it. My car has been dropped 2.3" and I even had to go thru some deep ass puddles before and my car is still running.
my friend neil went thru 3 bypasses before he realized that it wasnt worth it. The damn things kept falling apart. if you look at the bypass, its surrounded by a layer of foam. Thats supposed to absorb the moisture. Now what happens when that foam gets wet? youre still in the same situation.
yea i have the nismo intake and the bypass broke on me a month ago.. bought another one.. and if this one breaks.. i'm gunna say eff it and just get a silicone thingie.
if they really wanted to make a "bypass value" they should have made something like an exhaust cut out type of device.
the device would have two inlet holes and one outlet. With the flip of a switch, you can switch between inlet holes, picking which filter you wanted to run, short ram or cold air.
If its pouring outside and you didnt want to risk hydrolocking your shit, just pop the hood, flip the switch and you run the filter inside the engine bay. no worries no bullshit.
I should invent that device hell I just did all the work.
if only people at AEM would realize shit like this lol so much for "research and development"
It doesnt absorb moisture..it's has pressure sensitive flaps in it. If the main filter gets submerged in water, those flaps on the bypass would open up allowing air to be drawn in through there instead. does it work? beats me....lol. I've never had to drive through a deep puddle...but it never broke and I've had it on the car for about 35k miles.
Read this --> http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/te...lve/index.html ... I feel safer with it and that's prolly cuz if i blow my motor, i'll have a helluva time getting to work.

im talking about this:
I recall the NSX article but they even said themselves "The water was drawn up the pipe by over a foot, but it never came near the engine." If it was only drawn up ONE foot, the bypass wouldnt come in contact with the water anyway. The bypass is usually placed right before the MAF, a good 2 feet away from the filter.
Also even when I was dropped 2.3" my intake filter was still about 7-8" above the ground. Most people dont have that kind of drops so their filter would be even higher up.
If youre going to willingly going to drive in an 8-10" puddle youre asking for it LOL.
Specbee if your car is stock height you dont NEED the bypass but you can get it if it makes u sleep better at night.
Umm, that's because of the bypass valve...it opens so the water doesnt get sucked up all the way. But you're right, if he's stock ride height there's no need for it. Kelvin (b15nismo) came close to hydrolocking no?

if you find yourself in that situation, turn off your car and PUSH that shit, SERIOUSLY. I wouldnt even attempt to drive thru water upto my door. Bypass or not, thats a big risk.
What you guys think of my bypass idea LOL
well thanks everyone for your input, if i do not put the bypass on, will the intake fit right without that piece? i mean wont the filter be pushed a little higher up or do i need a piece of pvc pipe? ernie how did yours break? it like deteriorates or something? lol
you kow, you might have something there, you could seriously make some money off this idea....Originally Posted by FuLLah
not to stray off topic but i had an idea of having a web based taxi service where u payonline where you wanna go or wat not, and they pick you up and take you where u need to go, without having to ever take money out ur pocket in the car...all paid by credit card online...a week later i see the commercial on tv for it, i was like WTF...since your so handy and know people ? try to make something up, def will sell like a mofo..
nooch mine broke right before the foam.. the plastic basically snapped. it stilled stayed in place, but when i did my oil change one day and i noticed it was completely broken and off to the side so i bought another one. hopefully this one doesn't break
but would i still need a pvc pipe piece or can i join the two tubes with the coupler if i take off this thing? most likely imma put it in and see how it works out...
dude, if you have the bypass why dont you use it? you paid for it...
exactly lol but i been hearing about it breaking and falling apart so gets you thinking ya know...
if you have it use it as ash said LOL
