First off, I am sorry to bring up the words "timing problem" and "spec-v" in a new thread, but I have searched these threads until I've gone mad and dizzy and can't seem to find anyone with exactly the same problem. So, if it's out there, I'm sorry I didn't find it.

Car: 04 spec v with 169,000 miles. 2nd owner, and I've maintained this love hate relationship for 11 years now. Stock engine except CAI. Physical condition is very good given age and mileage.

Problem: car starts normal, and sounds normal. However, when it gets to temperature I can hear a distinct rattling around the timing case. I feel certain it's something in there (tensioner, chain stretching?) But I can't solve the mystery as to why it doesn't do it during initial start up. Noise can be heard throughout rpms once heated up.

Look, I'm not super mechanically inclined ... Just looking for thoughts/opinions on the matter from those who are. Ask a question and I'll answer the best I can. I work 11 hour days so may not be immediate when I respond.

I've had the car for sale for a little while now but my mentioning of this problem is scaring people away (which is completely understandable). I would just like to begin the understand the capacity of my issue.

I don't do forums much. Thanks to any who contribute...

You're probably on the right track. Probably something you mentioned or the intake cam actuator.

If there's a stock exhaust manifold on the engine replace it with a catless header ASAP.

listening.

thinking,
chain tensioner and chain guide replacement time

[might as well change the cam chain]
169,000 is adequate use, if this is the original oem part
imo

and or my nemesis

Sounds to me like your timing chain is stretched. The reason, I think, you only hear it after the engine gets warm is because that is when the metal will expand due to heat, and that is when the oil will be the thinnest.

Thanks all for your thoughts...Much appreciated! I do have to say, much like the last post... My thoughts have always been that once the chain gets hot it's stretched just enough to rattle. Which seems a little crazy to me but nonetheless not out of the realm of possibility. Again, thanks to all and of course I welcome any other thoughts or opinions. At the end of the day I'll either try to sell the car as-is or if I don't have any luck I guess I'll bite the bullet and try to fix the issue. And yes, 169k with all timing parts being from the factory. So I can't complain.
