Definitely. The question is, though, at what point do I stop with mods in the current rebuild before 91 becomes too little? I think everything on the list should be good to go, save for the cams which seem to have generated some uncertainty. I might just have to keep the factory cams in. I'll probably give 2J a call again in the near future to see if I'm still in the realm of possibility.

That sucks about the gas. Keep the 9.5:1 compression then. Get the biggest cams you can. No idea on 2j cams or when they will come out. Check with the 2J rep @DaveSpecB15
:ugh: well.....not a rep but I rep a lot......lol....if you're gonna run 9.5:1 then call 2j and see what they have to say about their cams for that compression ratio. And @yogi b's advice is probably good advice. Usually is.

Just got off the phone with Brock and he's thinking with my 9.5s that I can run the C1s and should be fine on 91.

So now it's looking like going with C1s instead of factory and the big plenum instead of factory.

It's funny how a two minute phone call can convince me to spend an extra thousand. Haha.

Make sure you buy a better header too.

For sure. I was just going to run the eBay header until the 2J header came out but if there's a better piece to go to in the mean time or just period I might make the switch if it's not too costly.

I looked through the header thread but there's so many different opinions and little dyno info that I wasn't sure what was best.

I think the 91 octane is the killer.

Or get a bunch of bottles of octane booster

We actually have E85 ten miles away but not 93. Go figure lol.

I know the 02 ecu is not ideal for what I want but an 06 swap is in the future. And honestly, I DO want to turbo the car. The only things stopping me at the moment are price, 02 ecu, and not knowing where the military will move me next and how strict the new location would be with emissions and visual inspections.

I'm just having a hard time between choosing to get my DD Sentra back on the road as soon as possible, or saving and waiting for everything I want.
it seems easy
as said

put the good parts in
any cam that fits your rpm requirements

you can live with 9.5cr and c1 cams
they need the 3" exhaust, the turbo will need too

no extra exhaust expense, come turbo time
and neat sound the whole time

the big cams effectively drop cr
due to the overlap

this limits power [and without cam phasing effects boost]

but mine still made 174 hp on a reflash alone [during breakin]
[and that was with the dc header and small exhaust]

btw
the use of a 60mm rear exhaust [obd, stainless]
seriously cut the power with c1 cams

i regret only not sleeving mine
at 16lb boost not really needed

but somehow i feel limited by the max 394hp
[drag tune,] this is capable of

as my wife says
"thats plain silly
you can't keep it straight at 300"

i always answer to that
"yet"

we know i will be looking for 500 hp
sooner or less sooner
lol

already admiring of Brocks "big mouth" turbo

this is def worth it
the plenum, c1's, 3" exhaust
but needs the race header

best street set up, as mentioned above
and tuned, it got near [or over] 30mpg
[with no lead foot]

the plenum adds street level torque and does not limit top end
good for turbo too

it came within 5hp, top end, compared to a highly ported intake manifold and v6 tb

at 4000 rpm the ported mani came alive

the plenum started at about 1800 rpm
by 4000 it made nearly 50 ft lb more tq than the ported manifold, vq tb combo

186 hp, 170 ft lbs for ported assembly, max

180 hp, 194 ft tq for plenum, max

both had race header, and 3" exhaust

race header is always a good reseller
mine was gone before it came off the car

give up the worry
this will be a good motor

nothing here is experimental
all is well proven and tried

relax
enjoy

imo

btw

my turbo build from scratch was 3 months
[thats turbo install and tune too]

that was 2jr
previously the vq swap took almost 2 years
lol

Thanks Barry and everyone else. All the advice is giving me better peace of mind.

I do need to get rid of the eBay header though. If I'm putting this much money into it already I might as well just get the race header.

Should I get the JWT reflash as well? What rpm limit would be ideal for the build? Will I be okay with the stock injectors and fuel pump or should I just upgrade those anyway while I'm building to further prep it for turbo?

Your motor build is bumping the compression ratio practically nothing so fuel upgrades are not needed at this time. Also if your planning on going turbo eventually then don't change the cams. It's pointless. Stock cams are plenty for a little N/A fun and have potentially to put down some serious numbers turbo.

Building a motor is not only expensive but time consuming... and then to do it again because you decide to install some choo-choo parts sucks. Trust me, I'm in the middle of Shit right now.

If at all possible. Do it once, do everything you want to do to it, and you'll never have to do it again

Myself and my friends that understand what goes into this whole process agree with this statement right here. And those who don't understand pretty much think I'm an idiot. Haha

I'm hoping to do everything at once because I don't want to have to pull it again until the next rebuild many, many years from now.

I have been tossing around thoughts of going turbo sooner than later lately but I'm still researching and taking everything into consideration.

going turbo sooner than later lately

since 2004, turbos seemed instant engine gore
every time joe said turbo i got sore

i fought it tooth and nail
but the vq did bail

left with no motor, a qr25de i did try
all the good parts i did buy

but alas and alack
no matter my attack

it was slow
absolutely no go

made me the clown of the drag race show
for it had absolutely no go

the war paint i had
but the times were so sad

on its hood
it's symbolic fate stood

fast as a speeding flower
with about the same power

it was so sad
i broke it bad

from jan to june
it did bloom

short was it's life
and full of strife

i tried and tried
every experiment i did abide

till it died

save yourself coin
decide what you really want
just go for it

you will find away
imo

for now when my friends want to play
i just run away
lol

Haha, fair enough. Boost is what I want but I'm not looking for anything crazy (for now). Just looking for that 7 psi DD life.

I know the thirst for more boost will find its way to me eventually but the goal of 7-9 will be the plan for now. Might as well take at least some advantage of the new internals. lol

i ran a car with 6lb boost for several days
joe was trying to sell me on the idea

it made about 240-260hp [guestimated]
was an unobtrusive pleasure
on a stock block

joe provided the same boost level for me at car delivery
and at 5-6lb i ran around for several days

it was a lovely car

very responsive and had a nice acceleration feel too
[on the gtec it ran high 13s to low 14s depending on traction]

i was happy with it

but once i turned the boost up
there was no going back

the very pleasant car at 6 lb became insane at 16lb
from high 13s to,
in the 11s
yikes

like from a Focus ST to Porsche 911 turbo,
with just a twist of a knob

I never went back

ThatDudeInBlue has a review on YouTube of a 2j 6lb B15. Seems worth it. But you'll definitely end up wanting more boost eventually.
